Facebook Respects Me
A few months back, I turned on Facebook messaging and linked my mobile account. Now when I am messaged by friends on Facebook, I get an SMS. It brings a bit more real-time-ness to Facebook.
However, I never reply via my phone. I guess I’d rather just walk to my laptop or hit up a fb app and type my response. Well, Facebook noticed.
I received this SMS today from Facebook:

Backing Up My Life
A friend asked me what I do for backing up my data on my mac, so I thought I’d share my reply here:
My first recommendation is to use Dropbox. It is by far the best backup service I have ever used, in part because it isn’t really a backup - more of a sync. Dropbox acts like any other folder on your local hard drive. You just fill it with files and folders, as you add or remove,...
A Real Conversation
A friend is working on a new project. As is usual, he wants it to get out there, be seen, loved, heard, appreciated, and reflect this warm glow back on him. Sounds awesome, right?
The conversation (yesterday) went something like this:
Him: “How do I get my point of view out there?”
Me: “Start putting it out there.”
Him: “You mean a blog or a website?”

Engineer Moments of Joy
In the shareable world, organizations everywhere are wondering how they can get people to talk about them. I hear variants of this almost daily:
“How can we get more followers on twitter?”
“What can we do to increase our Facebook fans?”
“Why aren’t people liking our posts?”
“What type of content should we share with our fans?”

One Cool Thing Quora Does
One of the maxims of product management and design I have found to be true over the years is this idea of delivering value quickly. Said from a social perspective, give before you receive.
Too often our apps, websites, surveys, etc ask users to provide something of value (a name, address, etc) before we do. This is in direct conflict to how real relationships work.
If you come over to my...
Who are you helping?
Like most people involved in tech, my mind is always racing. New ideas come along daily as I bounce from place to place on the web.
To be clear, I am not in any way chest puffing for having ideas. If my life and eclectic reading has taught me anything, it is that execution is where it is at. Everyone has ideas, usually left undone. The real magic is in the doing. I have always believed...
An inspiring story of what you can do when you care deeply, trust yourself, and work hard.
I love this video for one simple reason: It illustrates what craft means to me.
The effort expended to design something well is simply a shorthand for “I care”. In this era of immediate gratification and non-existent production costs, craftsmanship is all we have. It is what differentiates.
Our job is to find that thing which sets our hearts ablaze and dive into it, head first,...

On Comments:
I’ve found the communities emerging in comment threads on this site to be as useful, if not more so, than the articles themselves.
